End-to-end encrypted web chat
Secure chat that only the people in it can read.
VantaChat is an end-to-end encrypted chat app that runs in your browser, for one-to-one chats and groups of up to 200 people.
VantaChat encrypts messages, photos and files on your device before sending them. One-to-one chats use the Double Ratchet, the design Signal is built on; groups use Matrix's Megolm. Sign up in your browser with no email or phone number.
- We can't read your messages: they are encrypted on your device before they reach us.
- We never show ads or sell your data.
- We never ask for your phone number or email.

Chat
One-to-one and group chats, with every new message encrypted.
Your device encrypts each message before sending it, and the server stores only the encrypted data. Groups hold up to 200 people.
You can turn off your online status if you don't want others to see when you're online. When it's off, you won't see theirs either.
To confirm the other person is who they say they are, open Check safety numbers in the chat. You each see three groups of numbers. If they match, you are talking to the right person.
Files
Photos and files are encrypted before they're sent.
That includes voice messages and videos, and it happens on your device. The decryption key travels to the recipient inside an encrypted message.
The server stores the encrypted data and can't read what's inside.

Account
Forgot your password? You still have these 12 words.
When you sign up, you get 12 English words from the BIP-39 wordlist that crypto wallets also use. These words are never uploaded.
Write them down in order and keep them offline. If you lose both your password and the words, there is no copy anywhere and the account cannot be recovered. Anyone who has the 12 words can get into your account.
If you forget your password, use your username or VantaChat ID plus the 12 words to set a new one. Your other devices will be signed out.
Encryption
We deliver your messages but can't read them.
Encryption happens on your device; the server only relays and stores the encrypted data. HTTPS protects the connection in transit as well.

The server can't read
- Text of new messages
- The contents of photos, files, voice messages and videos
- The 12 recovery words and backup keys (never uploaded)
- Your login password (stored as a salted hash)
Open VantaChat only at web.vantachat.org, and keep your 12 recovery words offline.
